Utah Asbestos Dangers Remained Hidden for Decades
December 11, 2006 - The Salt Lake Tribune reports that many Utah residents were unknowingly exposed to a dangerous form of asbestos known as vermiculite. The vermiculite came from a Libby, Montana mine and was a popular form of attic insulation, cement additive and soil conditioner used in Utah and throughout the nation. The vermiculite was processed at two Utah plants known as Intermountain Products or Vermiculite Intermountain.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the microscopic fibers from the vermiculite dust filled the air at the plant and surrounding the plant. Often 20 to 50 years after an individual has inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers, an individual can suffer asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma. Approximately 50,000 tons of vermiculite from the Libby, Montana plant went to two Salt Lake City processing plants. Another 11,000 tons went to wallboard plants in Sigurd, Utah. One of the plants was located on 800 South in Salt Lake City. Another plant was located in Irvine.
An outreach plan is being devised by the Environmental Protection Agency to identify former employees who worked with the vermiculite and others who are at greater risk.
