Asbestos Discovered Delays Development

February 15, 2007 - A redevelopment project in Connecticut discovered asbestos in two of their buildings that has resulted in a delay in the project. Work crews discovered the asbestos while working on site. The buildings were scheduled to be demolished, however due to significant levels of asbestos found, the cancer causing material will need to be removed by the appropriate experts before any demolition can take place. The inhalation of asbestos fibers and dust has been linked to a fatal form of cancer called Mesothelioma.

Obviously the asbestos discovery and subsequent delay has affected the costs involved as the city of Derby was expecting to pay around $10,000, however asbestos removal will raise the cost to around $140,000. Luckily, according to the Derby Mayor, what they spend they will get back from the developer. The developer has already agreed that it is what it is, it costs more money and there's more remediation that has to be done. The asbestos removal work should begin in the coming weeks.
