MESOTHELIOMA SURVIVAL

An experimental anti-cancer drug called pemetrexed is continuing to show increasing promise for patients with mesothelioma making mesothelioma survival much easier. The previously untested combination of drugs plus the established chemotherapy drug carboplatin stretched patients' survival to an average of 15 months or longer, almost doubling the eight-to-nine month average experts say is more typical with other mesothelioma therapies.

There are actually patients in 2003 that lived more than 3 years after treatment which proves medical science is slowly discovering ways to prolong this deadly disease. In this particular study done back in 2003 about one third of the patients had tumor shrinkage, improvement in symptoms and far less pain. As with any drug or chemotherapy treatment there are side effects including a declining number of infection fighting white blood cells and platelets which help coagulate blood. Future trials are on the horizon so that mesothelioma survival rates are numbered in years versus months.
