WHAT IS MESOTHELIOMA?

There are many who ask now what is Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a dangerous and often times fatal cancer that normally affects the lining of the lung, heart or chest wall. The trouble with mesothelioma cancer is that you may not have a symptom for 25 or 50 years making it even harder to conclude and treat. The primary gender that this cancer affects is men and normally in their late 70’s to early 80’s. These men worked in asbestos mills, on construction sites, plaster farms, and textile plants. Asbestos was used freely for many years before they knew that is was extremely damaging to anyone who inhaled the deadly substance.

We say men contract this deadly disease but they are not alone. There are cases of women contracting mesothelioma as well. Some women worked with the dangerous material also. There are studies showing that some women are showing signs of mesothelioma because they used to wash their husband’s clothes or clean surfaces that the men laid asbestos ridden materials on inside the home. It is not easily contracted that way but there are certainly cases that suggest it happens and more so in the past 10-15 years.

What is mesothelioma you ask? It is an uncommon form of cancer that is often times caused by inhaling asbestos. Imagine working at a plant where asbestos flowed freely throughout the vents. Imagine still asbestos producing mills where particles would travel through the air like a mosquito. Asbestos was used for so many things in the middle of the century that it was harder to find a place that didn’t have it around versus a place that did. It was very common but now places of business are taking special precautions to make sure that asbestos does not find its way to school age children through asbestos lining bricks, cement, flooring products and textiles. There are many government entities that are demanding the removal of all asbestos materials from schools, business buildings, home insulation and fire retardant products. Asbestos was literally everywhere. There have been more than 3000 deaths of mesothelioma per year and that number is still on the rise.
